Introduction by Amanda Hopkinson

These past years have seen both a deepening of the ways in which the four principle UK organisations raise the profile of literary translation, and some of the effects on the wider fields of education, publishing and the media. The British Council works closely with the Arts Council, England, the Translators’ Association and the British Centre for Literary Translation in organising and supporting international and multicultural projects, and in publicising them through its website and other networks. There has been a significant increase, in real terms, in the value of grants awarded to individual writers, poets and translators.

Arab World Guest of Honour at the London Book Fair 2008
In partnership with the London Book Fair and the Arts Council England we presented a wide range of activities across London focusing on literature and writing from the Arab world. In the lead-up to 2008 we delivered a range of networking, training and information sharing platforms and events.The aim is to aid a direct increase of books published from Arabic to English and English to Arabic, with surrounding cultural and mutual dialogue.
